Blue Eyed Maid
The title of this post is also the name of the pub we went to tonight for fish and chips.
We set out on a walk around 4 this afternoon and ended up by accident (or fate) at the Thames. As soon as I realized we were nearing a river I started jumping up and down - no, I’m not making that up. I was beyond excited. We started walking across and we could see the city in front of us, the London Bridge to our right.
The city is great. Everyone’s in a hurry, but that’s to be expected. So many cute English-looking places. Every shop we walked past was adorable, and every group of people that passed was cute because of their accents.
We spotted a rather large dome-like building when we were across the river, so we started in that direction. We stumbled upon a cool old church. As we started to read the sign on the wall, it said that it was restored in 1667 after a “great fire.” Obviously we know that the history here goes far beyond any US history (as in before we were our own country), but that church was built, used, destroyed and restored, all 100 years before the US was even a country. How brilliant is that?
As we reached the large dome building I mentioned before, we realized that it was St. Paul’s Cathedral. I knew that it was big, but wow. It’s SO big. And it’s just in the middle of this amazing, modern city.
We decided to head back to the other side of the river where our hostel is, and as we were walking across the pedestrian bridge, we found ourselves staring at the Globe Theatre. THE GLOBE THEATRE. I think if we were the type we would have cried. How amazing. How the heck did it take us 22 years to get to the UK? I would be so happy never leaving this place.
We spent most of our night looking for a traditional english pub. We had criteria. The first was fish and chips - it had to be on the menu. The nest was that it had to have a two word name: plume and feather, eagle and child, rose and thistle… you get the idea. Problem is, we stumbled across this great place called the Rose and Crown, but they stopped serving food at 5pm, and it was 6:15. Standard dinner times have been different every place we’ve been so far. Good grief. Eventually we saw the Blue Eyed Maid and they had cheap fish and chips, and it was pretty cute. And delicious. Worth the walk and the wait, definitely.
